RNSA November, 2006 RADIOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA If you have never attended an RSNA show, it is the ultimate show for Radiology and an opportunity for manufacturers to show off their latest state of the art equipment. THERE IS REALLY NOTHING LIKE IT. Digital Imaging is the main topic for the radiographic side. Those of us in the "low end" of the market, private clinics, smaller orthopedic offices, chiropractic and veterinary clinics will not be closing the darkrooms and getting rid of film processors anytime soon. While CR (computed digital radiology) has been around for a while and continues to mature, DR (direct digital radiology) is becoming more common but is still relatively expensive. CR is significantly less, but unless you are processing a significant number of films per day, it is pretty tough to beat conventional x-ray film at this time. You can still digitize (scan) a film for teleradiology but to determine the entire cost, you must take into consideration software and storage. These are not insignificant issues. Finally, who is going to support your system? Expect to see some neat new digital workstations. Maxant is offering a new small footprint viewing station, for instance. Although PACS have been around for a while, they continue to mature and improve and direct digital continues to drop in price. If anything really new breaks through (I always seem to have some good rumors) I will post it. See you at RSNA!
