LEAD SHIELDING DESIGN ASSISTANCE IS OFFERED BY ROY DUNCAN, PRESIDENT OF LWA.  ROY IS A "QUALIFIED EXPERT" IN SHIELDING DESIGN AND CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH GENERAL OR SPECIFIC INFORMATION REGARDING CONSTRUCTION AND X-RAY SHIELDING.

Proper lead shielding for any given x-ray facility depends on many factors and variables.  One cannot generalize too much as so much depends on the use factors and occupancy factors of the surrounding rooms.  In addition the basic workload and power of the x-ray must be taken into consideration.  Math formulas are available which allow qualified experts to calculate the correct amount of shielding that must be provided in order for a given facility to provide a given safe level of shielding.

In general, dental facilities or mammography installations do not require much shielding, veterinary facilities may require some shielding, chiropractic facilities generally require some lead shielding as do general medical offices.  Hospitals and special procedure rooms all have their own requirements.

Plan on consulting with a shielding designer for a formal plan as required by your State.  In Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Hawaii or Alaska, we would be pleased to offer our services.  We need a copy of your plans with dimensions and the nature of the adjoining room.  We can provide you with a form copy of additional information that is required by us and the State in order to complete your plan.  Shield plans vary in cost depending on the nature of the project, so please call us and we can discuss your needs.  Proper shielding design proves the old adage that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
