Shielding requirements vary depending on individual State code. In order to assist any local city Planning Departments in Washington State, the following applies. Note that such determination and inspection is reserved by the WAC code and to my knowledge may not be changed at the local level. From: Roy Duncan, A Qualified Shielding Design Expert Reference: Veterinary Hospitals in Washington State & WAC (Washington Administrative Code). The issue of information regarding radiation protection from the generation of medical x-rays is becoming a more common request by various branches of local government. Veterinarians are technically not required to have their plans reviewed by a Qualified Expert, or the Department of Radiation Protection however they must still meet the requirements of State Code WAC 246-225-140 and the procedures per WAC 246-225-030. It is strongly advised that they consult with a Qualified Expert before proceeding with construction however. Note that there are no known local government regulations or guidelines other than the WAC and therefore no local government enforcement. All enforcement is under the Department of Radiation Protection. General Medical including Chiropractic offices that will be using radiographic (x-ray) equipment must have an approved shield plan filed with the State of Washington Department of Radiation Protection before such equipment may be installed and used. Veterinary facilities are not exempt from State registration but are not required to have calculations and a submitted floor plan. It is recommended that they have their facility reviewed by a "Qualified Expert" and or the Dept of Rad Protection. Note that per WAC 246-225-030 paragraph 3 states, "Diagnostic veterinary, podiatric, and dental facilities shall be exempt from submitting shielding calculations and floor plans." In addition, the operators will be required to wear appropriate protective apparel per WAC 246-225-140 paragraph 3. Last updated 6/03/2011
